Merry Christmas!

I am laying in my old bed in my sisters apartment. Yup, I made it back to the States. There was some stress in Detroit (overbooked my flight so I didn't get a seat but got compensated with $400 and dinner. Luckily I made it on the next flight out.) But this isn't my travel blog, this is about school. 

Let me recap the last two weeks in Goe-town. My little Christmas get together with my friends was nice. The older boys brought some friends and we all had a blast. Classes continued on. We had Histologie Labs which were actually fun. We sat at a table with 6 people and looked at different kinds of tissues. My table had some cool people sitting at it so we had our fun. The person going through all of the slides with us was Prof. Knabe. He did our Histology lectures as well and is pretty funny at times. He thinks working out is murder and described the part of the Trachea that doesn't contain cartilage as the "Whopper-friendly Zone".  Over the weekend I went and visited my grandma with my uncle and aunt. I didn't get as much studying in as I had hoped. I was rather shot by the time we got back to Goe. I participated in a Secret Santa with a few friends and they told me on the night I got back that we were going to exchange.....I wasn't prepared, let alone in any good mood so I told them my person would get theirs a bit later. On the Monday (14th), Michele and I had invited a few of our friends to eat with us at Diwan (turkish cuisine) as a sort of Christmas dinner. It was very enjoyable. Afterward, we went to a bar where we could play table soccer.  The rest of the week once again went by fast. Sadly, on the Friday, Michele left for Munich and some other friends left for home as well. The amount of friends that I actually still had in Goe started to dwindle down and it felt weird saying goodbye. Friday night I met up with two friends, Hauke and Bene, at the christmas market. It was nice hanging out with only guys again. We went to a friend of their's house and I was the only girl! It reminded me of my time in the Scode when I would hang out with all my guy friends. 

Over the 19th and 20th, I drove to Stuttgart to visit my great aunt and her sons. The one now lives in NY and was back for Christmas. It snowed a little bit and Chris and I went sledding. The hill was great and we rode down about 10 times before it got really dark and I suggested we go one more time and then go home. Half way down we crash onto our right side and have to stay lying down for a few minutes. We pulled ourselves together and hobbeled back to the house. There I examined my knee and found it to be swollen up and I found a huge blue/black bruise on my hip. My great aunt gave me a skeleton for Christmas! I was super excited because I was thinking about buying one but they are quite expensive. Sunday night I took the train back to Goe and with a little delay I was back in town by 4:30AM. The next day I had to meet up with someone regarding a party the Fachschaft is doing and then had Anatomy lecture and Histology Lab. I had to give a speech about immunhistochemistry. After class I went to the library and read some Histology because I wasn't able to check the book out over Christmas break. I stayed up late packing my suitcase. 

The next day I once again and lecture and lab. Afterward, my aunt picked me up, drove me to the train station and we met up with my uncle for dinner before I left. I spent the night in Hamburg and the next day flew to Paris (with a little bit of delay) then to Detroit (I studied and slept on the flight, amazing food AirFrance!) and then the drama happened at the Detroit airport but I ended up getting a flight. Today, Fran and I are driving home and I am super excited to see my family, friends and my dog!

Frohe Weihnachten! Ich liege grad in meinem alten Bett in meiner Schwesters Wohnung. D.h. Ich habe es geschafft und bin wieder in Amerika. Es war alles ein bissl stressig in Detroit (die Fluggesellschaft hat den Flug überbucht und hatten nun kein Platz für mich. Ich habe $400 bekommen und Abendessen. Glücklicherweise habe ich es auf dem nächsten Flug nach Madison geschafft). Aber das hier ist ja nicht mein Reiseblog also erzähle ich was über meinem Studienleben. 

Meine Weihnachtsfeier bei mir war ganz nett. Die Jungs haben noch ein paar Freunde mitgebracht und wir hatten alle viel Spaß glaube ich. Der Unterricht ging auch weiter. Wir hatten Histologie Praktika die Spaß gemacht haben. Wir saßen um einem Tisch herum mit 6 Leuten und haben uns Präparate angeschaut. Mein Tisch hatte nette Leute und wir hatten schon unsern Spaß. Die Person die uns beim angucken begleitet hat war unser Prof der auch die Vorlesungen gehalten hat. Prof. Knabe ist manchmal ganz lustig. Er glaubt das Sport, mord ist und bezeichnet die Region in der Trachea die kein Knorpel besitzt als die Whopper-freundliche Zone. Übers Wochenende bin ich zusammen mit meiner Tante und Onkel zu meiner Oma gefahren. Ich habe nicht viel lernen können. Als wir dann in Goe wieder ankamen war ich fertig und nicht besonders gut gelaunt. Ich habe beim Wichteln mitgemacht und mir wurde dann an dem Abend erzählt dass die Gruppe an dem Abend den Austausch machen wollten. Ich hatte mein Geschenk noch gar nicht und war auch nicht besonders gut gelaunt, deshalb habe ich gesagt das meine Person das Geschenk verspätet bekommt. Am Montagabend haben Michele und ich unsere Freunde ins Diwan geladen für ein Weihnachtsessen. Das Essen war lecker und der Abend war nett. Wir sind nach dem Essen noch zu einer kleinen Bar gegangen wo man Kicker im Keller spielen konnte. Die restliche Woche ging schnell vorbei. Am Freitag fuhr Michele schon nach München und andere Freunde fuhren auch schon nach Hause. Es wurden immer weniger Freunde in Goe und es war komisch immer wieder Tschüß zusagen. Am Freitagabend habe ich mich mit Hauke und Bene am Weihnachtsmarkt getroffen. Es war nett mal wieder nur unter Jungs zu sein (ich kenne das so von zuhause). Wir sind dann auch noch zu einer Hausparty von einem Freund von den gegangen und ich war immer noch das einzige Mädel. 

Am 19 bin ich nach Stuttgart gefahren um meine Tante Rose und ihre Söhne zu besuchen. Chris wohnt jetzt in NY und war grade wieder zuhause. Wir sind Schlitten gefahren und es hat echt viel Spaß gemacht. Wir sind ungefähr 10 mal runtergerodelt und dann wurde es schon recht dunkel und ich habe gemeint wir sollten noch einmal fahren und dann nachhause gehen. Auf der halben Strecke sind wir auf unsere rechte Seite gestürzt. Wir lagen also erst einmal da. Als der erste Schmerz weg war sind wir nachhause gelatscht. Dort habe ich erkannt wir dick mein Knie geworden ist und ein großer, blauer Fleck auf meiner Hüfte. Tante Rose hat mir zu Weihnachten ein Skelett geschenkt. Ich war überaus glücklich. Ich hatte mir nämlich schon überlegt ob ich mir einen kaufe. Am Sonntagabend nahm ich dann ein Zug zurück und mit etwas Verspätung war ich um 4:30 wieder in Göttingen. Am nächsten Tag musste ich mich mit einer treffen wegen einer Fachschaftsparty und dann hatte noch Anatomie Vorlesung und Histologie Praktikum. Ich musste ein Referat über Immunhistochemie halten.  Danach bin ich in die Bib gegangen und habe Histologie gelesen weil ich das Buch nicht ausgeliehen bekommen habe über die Weihnachtsferien. Ich war dann noch lange auf und habe meinen Koffer gepackt. 

Am nächsten Tag hatte ich wieder Vorlesung und Praktikum und dann ging die Reise los. Meine Tante hat mich zuhause angeholt und wir sind zum Bahnhof gefahren. Dort haben wir noch Abendbrot, zusammen mit meinem Onkel, gegessen. Ich fuhr nach Hamburg und habe dort übernachtet. Am nächsten morgen bin ich dann zum Flughafen gefahren und bin nach Paris geflogen (mit ein bisschen Verspätung), dann nach Detroit (ich habe entweder gelernt oder geschlafen auf dem Flug, AIrFrance hat tolles Essen!) und dann kam das Drama in Detroit. Ich habe aber dann doch noch einen Flug bekommen und Fran hat mich vom Flughafen abgeholt. Heute fahren wir dann nachhause. Ich freue mich schon so sehr auf meine Familie, meine Freunde und meinem Hund!!!!

Oh the weather outside is rainy...where is my snow?

Christmas time is finally here. Since the Biology exam it has been a little more relaxed. I currently have Physics lectures (including 4 hour long labs and 4 hour long discussions), Chemistry lectures (which I will elaborate on in a moment), Histology lectures with 2 hour labs and we just switched from Histology lectures to Anatomy lectures. I also attend a 2 hour long Chemistry review and 2 hour long Histology review. I have not been fully attending Chemistry lectures lately because they are so badly done. The professor isn’t teaching Chemistry, he simply presents it (those who have not had Chem in a while are totally confused). Instead I go to the library and work myself through the Chemistry book. I never thought I would say its okay to skip lectures but these are just so badly done that it is a waste of time. School keeps me busy, but my social life is not all that bad either. I am part of the Fachschaft (I set it equal to student council in High School) and Michele and I are planning a party on the 9th of January and also helping scan things for the website and so forth. We went to Thanners, the student bar, last Wednesday and met guys from the second semester. Tonight we are heading there again before heading to Savoy (night club). Tomorrow I am having people over for a little Christmas party. Sadly all it does is rain here so I don’t feel like its Christmas yet, even though I listen to WOLX Christmas music all day. I am flying home in 15 days and am super excited. The time flies here. Every Monday I comment that tomorrow is Friday because the weeks go so fast. It will be no time and I will be back home for a few days.

Die Weihnachtszeit ist endlich da! Seit der Bio Klausur geht es relativ entspannt zu (natürlich immer noch viel zu lernen). I habe im Moment Physik Vorlesungen (mit 4 Stunden lange Praktika und Seminare), Chemie Vorlesungen (dazu komme ich gleich zurück), Histologie Vorlesungen (mit 2 Stunden lange Praktika) und wir haben grad Histologie in der Vorlesung aufgehört und fangen nun mit Anatomie wieder an. Ich gehe auch zu ein 2 Stunden langes Histologie Tutorium und ein 2 Stunden langes Chemie Tutorium. In letzter Zeit gehe ich nicht die ganze Zeit zu den Chemie Vorlesungen weil die so schlecht gemacht sind. Der Prof bringt keine Chemie bei, er präsentiert es nur (die die Chemie abgewählt haben, haben es nicht ganz so leicht). Stattdessen gehe ich in die Bibliothek im Klinikum und arbeite mich durch das Chemiebuch durch. Ich hätte nie gedacht dass ich sagen würde dass es okay ist eine Vorlesung zu verpassen aber diese sind echt so schlecht und bringen mir nichts so dass ich lieber dann in der Bib sitze und das selbstständig lerne. Die Uni beschäftigt mich schon sehr gut aber mein Sozialleben ist auch nicht schlecht. Ich bin in der medizinischen Fachschaft und plane im Moment mit Michele die Absolventenparty am 9 Januar. Heute Abend helfe ich beim einscannen von Altklausuren für die Website. Letzten Mittwoch waren Michele und ich in Thanners, die Studentenkneipe, und haben dort Jungs aus dem zweiten Semester getroffen. Heute Abend gehen wir wieder hin und danach zu Savoy (Nachtclub). Morgen habe ich ein paar Leute zu mir eingeladen fuer eine kleine Weihnachtsfeier. Leider regnet es nur in Göttingen und es fühlt sich noch nicht so richtig Weihnachtlich an. Ich hoere zwar den ganzen Tag Amerikanische Weihnachtslieder aber das hilft auch nicht. Ich fliege in 15 Tagen wieder nach Amerika und kann es kaum erwarten. Zeit geht so schnell vorbei. Jeden Montag sag ich immer das morgen schon wieder Freitag ist weil die Woche so schnell vorbei ist. Es ist aber auch nicht mehr lange bis ich dann wieder in Amerika bin.

Saturday was our first exam for Med School. The topic? Biology. The degree of difficulty? Low. The Result? Passed. It really was not a big deal. We all went to the Christmas market to celebrate. We then picked up our certificates and at night, a friend and I went out to meet some people in Tanners, which is supposedly "the" bar to go to on Wednesdays and then we went dancing for a few hours in Savoy. The higher semester people were a bit lame and all stayed home from the previous night partying but we still had fun.

Samstag war unsere erste Prüfung. Das Thema? Biologie. Der Schwierigkeitsgrad? Niedrig. Das Resultat? Bestanden. Es war wirklich nicht schlimm. Wir sind alle hinterher zum Weihnachtsmarkt gegangen und haben gefeiert. Danach haben wir unseren Schein abgeholt. Abends sind eine Freundin und ich zu Tanners gegangen und haben einige aus unserem Semester getroffen. Wir beiden sind dann noch ins Savoy gegangen und haben ein paar Stunden getanzt. Die älteren Semestler haben schlapp gemacht weil sie am Abend zuvor zu viel gefeiert hatten und sind zuhause geblieben. Trotzdem hatten wir unseren Spaß.

Blue eye color is a mutation in the gene that synthesizes the protein that makes the eye color the color that it is! So everyone with blue eyes is a mutant! Just kidding, but technically its true :-)

Blaue Augen sind die Folge von einer Mutation in dem Gen das ein bestimmtes Protein synthetisiert, das wiederum die Augenfarbe bestimmt. Das heißt also dass jeder der blaue Augen hat ein Mutant ist! Schmarn, aber theoretisch stimmt das! :-)

The Rat

I finally had my long awaited Lab today. Rat preparation. Sadly it was only 3.5 hours, which I feel is not sufficient time to truly use the oppurtunity given with these animals, that in the end gave up their life for my learning. It was very interesting and from my group I did most of the work. The other girls were not to keen on cutting through skin, bones and organs. The rest of the day was packed full with classes from 8 in the morning until 6 at night. In the last two weeks I have also continued to go to the extra Anatomy lecture (last time the Prof brought in real bones for us to examine). We have also started Physics lectures, tomorrow Chemistry lectures start and on the 28th is our first exam in Biology which means I spent Sunday (from 9:45AM until 8PM) in the library studying. It was glorious though because I had a good night sleep the night before so that I wasn't falling asleep while studying!

The body's skin has certain regions called "Dermatom" which can be an indicator of organ sickness. The reason deals with embryology but for instance, if the inner side of the left upper arm hurts, it can be an indication of a heart attack. The nerve that supplies the heart has its root in the same place as that region of the arm.

Heute durfte ich endlich die Ratte präparieren. Leider waren es nur 3.5 Stunden dass nicht genug Zeit war um die Ratte völlig zu durchsuchen. Es war sehr interessant und ich habe von allen am meisten in meiner Gruppe gemacht. Die anderen Mädels waren nicht so scharf drauf durch Knochen, Haut und Organen zu schneiden. Der restliche Tag war ganz schön voll gepackt. Ich hatte von 8 Uhr morgens bis 18Uhr zu tun. In den letzten zwei Wochen bin ich weiterhin zu den extra Vorlesungen gegangen (letztes mal hat der Prof Knochen mitgebracht die wir untersuchen durften). Wir haben auch noch Physik letzte Woche angefangen und morgen fängt Chemie an. Am 28 schreiben wir unsere erste Klausur in Biologie. Das bedeutet dass ich Sonntag von 9:45 bis 20Uhr im Klinikum war und gelernt habe. Es war aber erfolgreich und weil ich am Abend davor gut geschlafen habe, schlief ich nicht jede halbe Stunde ein!

Interessante Fakte des Tages:
Die Haut hat Bereiche die als Dermatom bezeichnet werden. Diese können hinweise auf entzündete oder kranke Organe geben. Zum Beispiel, wenn die innen Seite vom linken Oberarm weh tut, könnte es auf ein Herzinfarkt deuten. Der Grund für dieses Phänomen liegt in der Embryologie. Der Nerv der das Herz versorgt hat seine Wurzel im selben Bereich wie die vom Arm.

Week 2

I'll start with the new feature of the blog. Since I am in Germany now, (my Aunt drew my attention to this fact) I will be starting this Blog bilingual. Since the posts are shorter than those of my travel blog, it shouldn't really take all the long and then people won't have to gnaw their way through the English.

Another successful and full week. We always have our lectures with everyone in our semester and lab & discussions in one of four groups. I belong to group A and the three girls I spend most of my time with are in group C or D so they have stuff together whilst I am only with one other guy from my O-Phase group. Tuesday and Wednesday were packed full from 8AM till 6PM. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I always had Lab from 8 until 11:30. We did interesting things such as look at Chloroplasts move under the microscope, watch alcohol fermentation, osmosis of cells, sorted flies according to their mutations and in my lab on Wednesday we took a little piece of pig liver and had to grind it until it became a liquid for further tests (this eventually led to the colorful picture below). I went and worked out after my busy day Tuesday. I needed it though because my brain was fried and I needed to do something where I didn't need to use it and rather my body. Thursday morning I went and worked out with some girls again and then had class until 5:45PM. There was an extra lecture going on in the Anatomy building that we were told about with the title "Illnesses of our Ancestors". I decided to check it out. The professor was good at lecturing, he showed a lot of pictures of mummies, the areas where they were found and then also pictures of bones and described how by only having the Calcaneus bone (one of the bones in your foot) you can tell if the person had good calf muscles, if it was a female or male to a certain extent, and if the person was flatfooted. He is going to be our lecturer for a part in Anatomy later on and I can't wait because he really makes it interesting and understandable. The plus to this whole thing is that if we appear continuously, we get a participation certificate which looks good for further processes in school.

Thursday night I went to an Agriculture Major party which was to say the least interesting and different.

Friday I went and visited my Aunt and Unkel and the weekend was spend being sick and studying (which meant no Halloween Party).

Tonight I am going to the German Theater here in town for a Medi Frosh Recepetion of some important guy of my major.

Noch eine erfolgreiche und lange Woche hinter mir. Unsere Vorlesungen finden mit unserem ganzen Semester statt und für die Seminare und Prakitums sind wir in einer von vier Gruppen geteilt. Ich gehöre zur Gruppe A and die drei Mädels mit den ich am meisten zu tun habe sind in entweder C oder D. D.h. dass die alles zusammen machen können während in meiner Gruppe nur einer von meiner O-Phasen Gruppe dabei ist. Dienstag und Mittwoch waren vollgepackt von 8 Uhr bis 18 Uhr. Montag, Dienstag und Mittwoch hatte ich Praktikum von 8 bis 11:30. Wir haben interessante Dinger beobachtet w.z.B. Chloroplasten in Zellen anzugucken, Alkoholische Gärung, Osmose in Zellen, Fliegen sortieren mit bestimmten Mutationen und in meinem Praktikum am Mittwoch haben wir sogar ein Stück Schweineleber gemörsert bis es flüssig war für weitere Bearbeitung (das führte schließlich zum Bild). I bin nach meinem vollen Tag zum Sport gegangen am Dienstag. Es tat aber gut denn den ganzen Tag lernen macht das Gehirn irgendwann mal platt und da ist Bewegung gut. Donnerstag morgen bin ich auch noch zum Sport gegangen und hatte dann Unterricht bis 16:45. Da war eine extra Vorlesung im Anatomiegebäude  mit dem Thema „Krankheiten unsere Vorfahren“. I entschied mich dahin zu gehen und zu gucken ob es sich lohnt. Der Prof war sehr gut im vortragen. Er hat viele Bilder von Mumien gezeigt, die Umgebung wo diese gefunden worden sind und Bilder von Knochen. Anhand dieser Bilder konnte man z.B. am Calcaneus Knochen (einer in der Fußwurzel) erkennen ob die Wadenmuskulatur gut ausgeprägt war, ob es sich um eine Frau oder einen Mann handelt und ob dieser Mensche Plattfuß hatte. Er wird unser Prof für ein Teil der Anatomie Vorlesung sein später im Kurs und ich kann es kaum erwarten weil er den Stoff interessant und kapierbar macht. Das Bonus von der ganzen Geschichte ist dass wenn wir regelmäßig erscheinen bekommen wir eine Teilnehmung Bescheinigung dass irgendwann mal dann gut auf Papier aussieht.
Donnerstag Abend bin ich zur LaWi Party (Landwirtschaft) gegangen und die war interessant und sehr anders als die Mediziner Party. Freitag habe ich meine Tante und meinen Onkel besucht und der restliche Wochenende wurde damit verbracht krank zu sein und zu lernen. Dass heißt ich bin auch nicht auf einer Halloween Party gewesen. Heute gehe ich ins Deutsche Theater wo wir MediErstis von einem in der Medizinischenabteilung begrüßt werden.

A-Rhesus Positive

The first week has officially been survived (I say survived because of all the parties that are constantly going on). At the moment I have Biology (consisting of Zoology and Botany) and Anatomy Lectures. The highlight of all the classes was probably the Zoology Lab. The labs are 3.5 hours long and I thought they would seem like they go on for ever but that was not the case. We started out with DNA replication, moving on to looking at Mitosis stages of onion root cells under the microscope (so cool!) and finally determining our own Blood group. As I expected I am blood group "A" and Rhesus positive (my blood donation pass says so as well). Below are pictures of my blood mixed with different Anti-Serums to test which blood group one belongs too. The first serum is Anti-A, second is Anti-B and the last is Anti-A and B. The single one is a Rhesus test. If the blood clots its positive. Since my blood i.e. clotted in the Anti-A, I have "A" blood because the serum was against "A" and made it clot. Same principle with the Rhesus. Some really interesting facts I took from the classes were as follows:

The human body produces about 70kg of ATP a day!

The Mitochondria a person has comes only from the mother, not the father!

Extracurricular activities contained A LOT of walking around. I don't have a bike yet and this is a problem that will be fixed very quickly. Currently my classes are at furthest 20 minutes walk away but once Chem and Physics start, I will not be able to walk there. I received a starter package from Neni's (my best friend) mom and sister and one from my mom. I had to walk 4,4km for the one from my mom because I personally had to pick it up from customs! No idea why, I didn't really have the time to ask either because I had to hurry up and get to class. The one from Neni's mom and sister was at the post office at the train station because it didn't fit into my mail box.

Thursday night I went to Shmorti's house with Simon (my roommate) and some friends. We ate pizza and hung out until about 11PM when my friend and I left to go to a Med-student party. We were the first ones there but it didn't take long until others came. She had to go home early because she had class at 8AM the next morning. I met up with the leaders of our O-Phase group and stayed out with them.

I had to run some errands for my Aunt today and soon I will be leaving to go to the Business-student party for a little bit. I leave for Bremen early tomorrow to meet up with relatives so I will not be staying out too late.

Orientation Week

I survived. I survived the last four days of partying. Orientation week is so much different in Germany than it was in the States. At UW (okay I will admit I was in Europe the whole summer where events were taking place) I went and signed up for classes and learned how to use my student account. Here in Germany, it is one big drinking party. The first event I went to was our greeting meeting. The Anatomy building is 2 houses away from my apartment. Once I arrived at the building (it was 10AM) I was given a beer and a sticker was put on me that claimed that I belonged to a certain group. A different girl came and ripped the sticker off my jacket and told me to come to her group instead. It is a good thing I did. After the infos and introduction we went on with group competitions. I was in my skivvies three times for extra points for our group. The next day we were informed that our group had won. The last four days have been filled with parties, hanging with new people and the occasional hour of sleep. Today I am chilling (almost forced into doing so because my muscles are aching from exercising). Tomorrow we have our last day of orientation meetings and then Tuesday it all starts. I am going to go donate blood before heading to the Anatomy building for the meeting.
